Cuisinart CSC-650 Slow Cooker Review

Cuisinart CSC-650 Slow CookerI did quite a bit of research before purchasing this slow cooker.

America's Test Kitchen recommends West Bend Versatility slow cooker. It is a truly versatile model, but I didn't like its aluminum insert. As you may know, aluminum can be hazardous to health, so this slow cooker was scratched off my list pretty quickly.

The other models I looked at were All-Clad Stainless Steel Slow Cooker (available from William Sonoma only), Farberware Millennium (also recommended by America's Test Kitchen), Cuisinart CSC-650 and various Rival models ("various Rival models" has an interesting ring to it :) ).

All of the latest slow cookers are made in China, so I was somewhat concerned about the construction quality. One of the main reasons I picked Cuisinart model was a 3-year warranty, compared to just 1 year for the rest of the competition.

Another factor was the generally positive feedback from CSC-650 owners. Cooking.com is probably a better place to check for reviews, because they let you post a review only if you actually purchased that particular item from them.

I had this baby delivered to me about a week ago, and I put it to work right away. I must say I am satisfied with my purchase decision. Having said that, here's a list of things that I do and don't like about this machine...

Do Like:
--------
- 3-year warranty (1 year for every other slow cooker I researched)

- retractable cord (I wish every appliance had it!)

- cooks well (overall), and no, it doesn't burn food as some reviewers have indicated

- construction quality seems to be good, although it is impossible to say for sure until appliance is a couple of years old

Don't Like:
-----------
- stainless steel housing gets stained quite easily, should have been more fingerprint-resistant

- "Made in China": $99 is a premium price to pay for an item that was manufactured using cheap labor; manufacturers who reap huge profits from the North American market should invest into the local labor market

- cooks most things faster than recipies (even the ones included in Cuisinart booklet) indicate, so you have to keep an eye on your food to make sure it doesn't overcook

After purchasing the slow cooker, I headed straight to the local bookstore to pick up a recipe book. I skimmed through about 6-7 titles, and ended up buying Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook by Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann. Most of its recipies are made from scratch and rarely use any canned ingridients. It also seems to have the best overall collection of recipies.

Yesterday, I had a few friends over and we had ourselves a feast. I cooked quite a few things in the slow cooker:

- Lamb Goulash (which was ruined/overcooked - the first thing I ever done in this slow cooker)

- Chicken Casseatore (not sure about spelling, it's from the Cuisinart booklet) came out nicely, it was around the time that I started looking closely after the cooking process.

- Short Ribs In Red Wine were perfect, here, again, the cooking time was 5 hours instead of 7 hours indicated in the recipe.

Overall, I am happy. I didn't experience any of the problems reported by some reviewers. I can safely recommend this appliance.

Professional Series PS77401 Stainless-Steel 2-Slice Toaster Review

Professional Series PS77401 Stainless-Steel 2-Slice ToasterNot a bad toaster, just not a particularly good one either.Bought it to replace a vintage toaster from the 50s and that toaster could toast perfectly. This one toasts more on the outside sides of the bread than the sides facing the center. Also, there is little leeway in settings between toasted nicely and burnt.Looks good though.

Attractively housed in stainless steel with black accents, this stylish toaster not only looks great in any contemporary kitchen, but it also toasts bread to crispy perfection. Simply add one or two slices, lower the lever, and turn the browning-control knob from one to six for light to dark, depending on the shade desired. Toast pops up automatically when it's ready to be slathered with butter and jam. The unit's extra-wide slots will accommodate slices of homemade bread, English muffins, bagels, and more. In addition, its electronic push-button controls include "defrost" for thawing and toasting frozen items, "reheat" for warming previously toasted foods, and "cancel" for ending the session at any time. Other thoughtful details include a function indicator light, cord storage, and a slide-out crumb tray for quick cleanup. Cuisinart TOB-30 Classic Toaster Oven Broiler Review

Cuisinart TOB-30 Classic Toaster Oven BroilerI can't say enough good things about this oven. What I like most about it is its exceptional toasting ability...slices come out toasted evenly every time. And if you want to stop the toasting process, just press "stop," which is a welcome change from other toasters where a dial has to be almost forced back into the "off" position. It also functions very well in the baking mode...preheats fast too.
Its polished chrome exterior gives it an upscale look and is different from the typical white/cream color that can eventually become stained/burned looking with time.If this was in a "Survivor" of toasters, it would surely outlast the competition.I've had two Delonghis in the past that performed poorly, and Krups (though pretty reliable) just doesn't look as good.Works great and looks great too. What more can you ask for?

Cuisinart TOB-50BCH Classic Toaster Oven Broiler, Black Chrome Review

Cuisinart TOB-50BCH Classic Toaster Oven Broiler, Black ChromeThe product description says "spacious" and that is just NOT true at all. The interior is very small. Can only use one rack at a time. Not worth the price at all. Can get a much bigger one for this price of $99.

I bought it on sale for $41.50 and while it looks good on the outside, the inside is way too small for my needs. I do not see how it is possible to get 6 slices of bread in there unless you would totally overlap all of them. Interior width (left to right) is about 11 inches, wall to wall. Depth (front to back) is about 9 inches. You have about 3 inches (top to bottom- plus you have to consider the heating coils on top take away from this measurement, decreasing cooking space) of space to actually use for your baking pan or tray with food on it, on the rack. The wording on the knobs and buttons on my unit were crooked. The instruction/recipe booklet is a total joke. There are no diagrams/pictures as to how to insert the trays and pans. There is 1 picture of the unit, so if you are unfamilar with toaster ovens, you would be lost. I have looked at many online and many instore, but have never owned one. While it may not seem like it would be hard to figure out how to insert the trays and pans, it is. There is the crumb tray, the drip pan, the baking tray and the rack. The only way I can figure out how to use the drip pan is to lay it directly onto the heating coils. To me, that doesn't sound right, but it is the only way it fits in there. And if you use that, you lose space for cooking. If you use the drip pan, then the rack sits crooked inside. You have to use the rack to use the bake pan. The rack sits crookedly or slanted no matter what, even if you only insert the rack, it is crooked. You can, of course, put the drip pan in the bake pan on the rack, which is maybe how you are supposed to do it. The instructions for use are lacking. This is just so totally not worth the price at all. For this price you can get the 3 tray counter top rotisserie/convection oven, which is what I originally wanted. The description leads you to believe you could bake a pie in here. Guess again. Not gonna happen. Unless it is a tiny pie and it had better not rise or you will be scraping off the roof of the interior. This was a bad purchase all the way around. I think the $99 price tag is grossly ridiculous for this thing. If you want to use it to make 2 slices of toast, and don't mind paying $99 to do so, then this is for you. If you have hopes of doing ANYTHING else, buy something else.

EDIT: Ok, I took a minute to go check, to be fair, and you can get 4 slices of bread in there if you squish them all into the bake pan that the unit comes with. No way in heck that you are getting 6 slices in there unless you put 2 slices on top of each other and then it will touch the top of the oven. And I used regular bread, nothing fancy or oversized. This thing is a mess and the product description is NOT accurate at all!

This purchase was very disappointing to me. I have been wanting a toaster oven for so long. I had my heart set on a particular one, but have been waiting on a sale. I decided to buy this one thinking I would use it til I got the one I wanted, eventually. I can't fathom keeping this even for the interim.

I am gonna upload pics, they might not be so good as I am using a 2mp cell phone cam. I don't think they show the crooked wording well or the slanted baking rack.

I hope this review helps someone in one way or another.

Needless to say, this thing is goin back.

Hamilton Beach 2-Slice Toaster Review

Hamilton Beach 2-Slice ToasterThis toaster does everything we want and looks very nice. The toast comes out evenly on both sides. After the cycle is done, the bread is a little recessed in the slots keeping it nice and warm until you use the lever to raise it up.The crumb tray pulls all the way out for easy cleaning. Bagel and frozen settings work great, too. Toaster is used every day by 3 heavy bread consumers and everyone likes it.Brushed stainless looks great and doesn't show fingerprints. Maxi-Matic ET-5W Elite Cuisine 2-Slice Toaster with Variable Temperature Control, White Review

Maxi-Matic ET-5W Elite Cuisine 2-Slice Toaster with Variable Temperature Control, WhiteWell, It works (most of the time). But the quality is so so. Sometimes the latch cannot lock into the place. I have to "shake" it a couple of times to make it work. I also notice the possible overcooking problem mentioned in another review when you toast multiple bagels in a short duration. KitchenAid KCO1005OB 1/2-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Countertop Oven, Onyx Black Review

KitchenAid KCO1005OB 1/2-Cubic-Foot 6-Slice Countertop Oven, Onyx BlackWhat a disappointment.I am a huge Kitchenaid fan and I can't believe the poor quality of this toaster oven.As others have said, the finish is poor...the paint is not smooth and is chipping off around the oven door straight out of the box.The stainless steel trim is rough and cheap looking; it seems poorly machined. As for the performance, toasting is totally aggravating since the top element gets MUCH hotter than the bottom. The timer is cheap and the "ticking" is annoying. When the timer ends, the bell is out of synch. There is no on/off switch; just the timer to control the oven.I expected MUCH more from a toaster oven in this price range.I was happier with my old Toastmaster that cost about $40 and lasted for years. You can do much better than this for considerably less money.

Cuisinart BRK-200 Brick Oven Deluxe, Stainless Steel Review

Cuisinart BRK-200 Brick Oven Deluxe, Stainless SteelI purchased this beautiful toaster/convection oven to use as a second oven for entertaining/holidays and for everyday use to cook for just the two of us.

First of all, it's darned beautiful to look at. It matches my stainless appliances and looks fabulous on my counter. The controls are very easy to use. It comes with 2 racks (although you're only supposed to use one at a time) and a baking pan/broiler tray. But the best thing is that it comes with a baking stone which sits in one of the racks and the oven itself is lined with baking stone material on either side. The back of the oven has the convection fan. All non-stone surfaces are of nonstick material, which makes it a cinch to clean.

In the month I've had it, I've used this amazing appliance to bake cakes and casseroles, broil shrimp, make pizza, roast tomatoes and chickens and even toast an english muffin! It passed every test with flying colors. The oven is large enough to fit a whole chicken for roasting - and did a great job.

I'd say the weak points are that you have to turn the oven around to get the crumb tray out (a minor inconvenience) and both the crumb tray and the baking pan tend to warp when the oven is hot.

To use the baking stone, you must preheat the oven for at least 30 minutes. Not a problem for me, as I preheated while waiting for my pizza dough to rise. Worked out great.

I'm delighted to give this my highest recommendation.

DeLonghi EO1200B Large Capacity Toaster Oven, Black Review

DeLonghi EO1200B Large Capacity Toaster Oven, BlackThis oven is definitely considered large, even if it doesn't appear to at first.I have another DeLonghi oven that is going strong for over 12 years and it is barely 11" wide and just 9" deep. The 6-slice Oven reviewed here easily handles a 13" round pizza, with a special round protrusion in the rear to handle the round pizza shape.By comparison, my old oven is good only for 4 slices of bread.

The 3 dials of the 6-slice oven is the way to go, offering far more control via option to have upper coil only, lower only, and both.I had very good luck with DeLonghi kitchen products.

Cuisinart TOB-30BW Toaster Oven/Broiler Review

Cuisinart TOB-30BW Toaster Oven/BroilerI have owned our Cuisinart TOB-30 series for less then 3 months andwe were very happy with it, until one day we noticed the unit would not shut off when turned to the off setting, the light would remain on and there is still being heat generated in the oven in the off position, then within a week, when you would turn the unit to the bake selection, it would not turn on and sparks would shoot out the back, only the toast feature remains working, and if you turn the knob to go through other settings sparks are generated. If you have the same situation I highly recommend you goto www.cpsc.gov the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and let them know of your concern, maybe we can get these recalled, it appears to be a faulty switch they are using.Im not hearing positive things about there service, but if you buy one, save your receipt and warranty information, you may need it and be aware of the unit at some point may not shut off unless you unplug it (if you go on vacation, etc)

Cuisinart TOB-165 Convection Toaster Oven/Broiler, White Review

Cuisinart TOB-165 Convection Toaster Oven/Broiler, WhiteI have a toaster oven graveyard out in my dumpster. I was buying name brands and subjecting them to only moderate use, yet we were going through the things faster than pet goldfish.
For my most recent purchase I decided to pay for top quality. I based my purchase decision on my experience with other Cuisinart products and extensive reading of reviews from many sources. I've had my oven for about six months now, and I've been heartily pleased with my selection.
Besides durability, my chief concern in shopping had been size. It turns out this is even bigger than what I had before--both wide and tall. I can fit Corningware pans with the domed lids and knobs on top. Yet the outer dimensions are quite modest.
I wasn't sure I would use the convection feature, and in fact didn't get around to it until last week. It produced an excellent roast chicken, and I probably will use it more and more to make "weekend" dishes during the week. The additional cost for the convection over the regular was small, so it's definitely worth it even for occasional use.
The oven itself functions admirably. I love that it beeps when it's fully preheated, and the heat sensor really does keep it constantly and evenly heated to the correct temperature. I'm using this much more than my regular oven, especially during the summer.
The controls are easy to use and well thought-out as far as flow and intuitive functions. The only thing I'm not crazy about is setting the timer--one press for every minute, one for every hour. Gets to be a pain when you're setting 45 minutes. But, that is balanced out by the fact that the timer alarm keeps beeping until you come turn it off. No one little "ding" that you miss because you've stepping into the other room for a minute, leaving your food to burn.
Toasting is uneven as noted elsewhere, but this is typical of toaster ovens. Adjusting the rack can help. And honestly, it's really only an aesthetic problem. I do like that the toasting fuction includes a countdown timer so you know how long until breakfast!
My only real complaint lies with the broiler pan. Upon first inspection out of the box I was pleased with its apparent quality. But on the very first use it warped, and now buckles significantly on every use. Further, after the first washing I took it out of the drying rack only to discover rust along the bottom edge where water had pooled. I didn't even think it could rust, let alone do it on its first contact with water. I have to think my specific pan is lemon, as for them all to be like this would just be inexcusable in a product of such otherwise impeccable quality.
Also, the design team really fell apart when it came to the oven rack on which this pan sits. The rack--at least in one of its positions--actually wraps around the front corners of the pan. This means in order to take the pan out of the oven you have to lift it 1/2" vertically over the rack. Lift it and whatever's on it, plus whatever hot grease has accumulated, with nothing to grab it by. The other option is to take the rack out with it, which means tilting everything 30 degrees to get it past the stops. Not only is this bad design, it's dangerous.
But since I'm not using the pan every day, and since I love everything else about it, I'll still give it five stars.

Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven Broiler Review

Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven BroilerI have had this oven for several months now. I missed an opportunity to by it as a factory refurbished unit, and ended up buying it new here. Initially, I wanted to hold out for a convection oven with a larger capacity, but the reality of unit size and lack of availability of a larger oven with similar features convinced me to by this model.

I think I made the right choice. It is large enough to bake and broil a wide variety of things without having to resort to the "big oven", it has accurate, even temp control, and enough features and custom settings that I am still discovering new and better ways to use it.

It is a pretty large oven, does everything advertsed in best of class fashion, it's very easy to clean, and looks "right" no matter how your kitchen is outfitted. Even simple tasks like making toast are handled better than any regular toaster or cheap toaster oven that I have tried. When toasting bread or bagles, the first part of the cycle brings the bread up to teperature without bringing the heat elements up to "toasting" tepmerature. Towards the end of the cycle, the elements glow bright red, and toast both surfaces very evenly, and to taste. The result is perfectly toasted bread, bagles, pizza slices, etc, without cold centers. The cycle can easily be tailored for your favorite bread. Perfect.

Before I forget, someone posted a "review" here that really was a question about what temp the oven is capable of. The oven can also broil, so that would indicate that it can reach high temps, and in fact, it can. The "bake" setting allows you to select a temerature on the display up to 500 degrees. Most any cooking technique that can be done with a quality conventional oven can be done with this gem. And more. When I first started using the oven, I checked it's indicated temp with my electronic thermometer that I use for calibrating industrial sensors. In every case, the indicated air temp was within a few degrees of reality. My full sized oven wasn't anywhere near that close when it was new.

Broiling, baking, defrosting, and reheating leftovers are also given the benefit of digital control over the cooking cycle. Even the crumb tray was designed for effective operation, and ease of cleaning. I have used a number of dedicated convection ovens, and more than a few toaster ovens over the years, but this one is in a class by itself. Even if you grew up with the microwave, this oven won't gather dust on your countertop.

Update... July 12, 2005. This oven is used most every day, and has proved to be a solid performer. As time passed, I have used pretty much all of the functions of the oven, and learned to customize settings to please me along the way. I have not had a single problem with the oven since the day it arrived, and being easy to keep clean, it still looks factory new (when I clean it). It is about as large as I care to have on the countertop, and for bigger jobs, I simply use the main kitchen oven. For most anything else, this is the oven that gets the call. I still rate five stars.

Cuisinart TOB-50 Classic Toaster Oven Broiler, brushed stainless and black Review

Cuisinart TOB-50 Classic Toaster Oven Broiler, brushed stainless and blackUpdate: So far, this toaster oven can keep its five stars. I'm extremely happy with:

- The ease of cleaning the bottom tray, cheese, grease and all
- The Golden Brown & Delicious toasting of bagels, frozen waffles and bread
- The feel of the controls, even though I use medium color toast 80% of the time.
- While I have preferred functionality over form, I like the way it looks too.

Original review:
We use toaster ovens so much -no, never for real baking- but for open face sandwiches, anything where browning cheese is on top, freezer waffles and the like. Almost everything we use drips. Eventually all toaster ovens end up with grease and other solidified crud that bonds to the insides. So, we'd look for deals on the $30 Black & Decker classic toaster oven, buy two, and replace after 7-14 months rather than deep-clean them. I recycle religiously, but the B&D's only lasted about that long with our usage. As did a couple of more expensive TO's.
This time we've gone with the $99 Cuisinart. Sorry for that long history above, but I think more people will relate to this experience. Here are the nice points:

- Toast seems to take longer than the B&D, but there's a lot of room, and the golden-browning seems to be better and more even. Sourdough, whole wheat, plain white, seeded sourdough and baguette slices all seem to get this rich color that might just be the result of slightly slower toasting.
- Toasting freezer waffles is just amazing. Crisp, golden and no burns. Sometimes I like to add butter and honey at the end of the cycle and toast some more, and the results are very very good.
- Lots of space, great for that leftover pasta that you can add cream to, cover with cheese and bake over. The base is stable and the rack slides out very easily, holding a ceramic oval dish with ease.
- I kept trying to find out the wattage on this oven, one place had 900W (less than the B&D's 1300+ claim) but I haven't found it yet. I took my chances and I'm happy so far. This has two elements on top and two below. I like the results of this placement.
- For something you use every day, the controls are very pleasing to use. No cheap clunk at all. Nice heavy feel to the knobs, and an elegant start and stop button.
- The door is flat, and the hinges are a bit noisy but again the feel is solid
- The top gets hot (it's brushed stainless) and seems to want to expand. But this doesn't bother me.
- Built-in spacers are very convenient. The handles on the sides help keep some distance from other things (1/2") and there are bumpers behind to keep space between the oven and the wall.
- The interior is very straight, no funky shaping. Perfect and timeless.
- The rack is offset from the sides that slide into the toaster, offering a low or high position on each of two sets of rails. We like the upper rail, low position. Four possibilities.

If this lasts me three years I'll be very happy and at the same price point as the B&D's (which have become increasingly unreliable lately, toast buttons fail fast). Cleaning seems to be simple, stuff doesn't adhere to the crumb tray much. Cuisinarts are typically overpriced, but so far those I have, have been a great oasis when you've tried a bunch of other appliances that have problems. You eventually get to the point where "value" redefines to something that will feel good to use daily and function flawlessly. If this fails on me, I'm coming back to retract some of those five stars.

Cuisinart TOB-60 Convection Toaster Oven Broiler Review

Cuisinart TOB-60 Convection Toaster Oven BroilerI followed the instructions for toast-set the rack to the B position, turned the temp to 500 degrees, set on bake/toast,turned the timer dial past 20 minute than back to the toast shade I desired, I selected the lightest shade possible. I was a little nervous after reading the burned toast comments so I stood by and watched. The toast was perfect, exactly as it would have been in a toaster.

Next I tried a 12" frozen pizza, followed the instructions-set to 425 degrees, set the rack to the A position, set the timer. The only thing I did differently was I placed a sheet of alumium foil under the bottom heating elements on top of the crumb tray because I put the pizza directly on top on the rack (instructions do not indicate to do this).I added extra cheese and spices, set the timer for 10 minutes. The top of the pizza was done perfectly. The crust was slightly burned on the bottom, next time I'll set the timer for 9 minutes and lower the temp(9 minutes for a frozen pizza! wow, even my pizzaz pizza cooker takes 25 minutes).

Yes, the dial is hard to turn at first, it does loosen up, so far this is my only complaint. I can't wait to roast chicken or a full meal using the convection feature. So far so good, very happy with this product.I got it for $104.00, so I'm even happier with the price.

Breville BOV650 Compact Smart Oven Review

Breville BOV650 Compact Smart OvenIt's a shame you have to spend over $150 for a good toaster oven, but if the cost is not an issue, this is an excellent one. This is not a convection oven, but is exactly what I wanted and it fits perfectly where the cheap one it replaced was.
This oven is well made, the door opens smoothly, the rack comes out easily. The pan that comes with it is heavy and enameled, not cheap sheet metal. The control system is excellent. The display is illuminated while setting or cooking, but dims out when not in use. I found it very easy to use. Toasting is a single touch and it compensates for the hot oven with multiple toast cycles. I've used the bake cycle and the muffins turned out great. It remembers your last setting for each cycle, so if you determine the 'perfect' setting for your favorite bagels or pizza, it's preset and ready to start when selecting the cycle. The crumb tray pulls out the front and is very easy to clean. This is vastly superior to out the back or from the bottom that most of the others I looked at have.

Cuisinart TOB-195 Exact Heat Toaster Oven Broiler, Stainless Review

Cuisinart TOB-195 Exact Heat Toaster Oven Broiler, StainlessThe Cuisinart TOB-195 costs a little more than most toaster ovens but it is such a joy to use. Some of the things I like about it:

1. Size. You can fit a 12" pizza in it.
2. Controls below the door. It saves a lot of countertop space.
3. Alarm to let you know when the oven is at the right temperature.
4. Digital temperature setting so you don't have to guess at it.
5. Convection oven feature.
6. Non-stick walls for easy clean-up.

The Cuisinart takes only a few minutes to warm up to the proper temperature, unlike a regular oven which can take several minutes. Pizzas crisp up nicely and my favorite banana bread recipe baked perfectly. I expect to use my Cuisinart more often than my regular oven, except for times when company is over.

I relied on reviews of the previous model, the TOB-175, before purchasing the TOB-195 and must say that Cuisinart has continued their great tradition of creating wonderful kitchen electrics.

Cuisinart TOB-155 Toaster Oven, Stainless and Black Review

Cuisinart TOB-155 Toaster Oven, Stainless and BlackMy husband said he needed a toaster oven for his work so I told him to take ours and I'd buy a new one. (yay!) I went shopping all around town looking at different models... wasn't too impressed with what I saw. The few I DID like I came home to read horror reviews about on amazon. I finally found this one and I believe all the possitive reviews are right. This warms up quickly and toasts perfectly. It looks very nice and seems to be excellent quality. Its very easy to use and I LOVE the touch buttons and digital display. Within minutes of plugging it in I successfully toasted half a frozen bagel as an experiment/snack and it was toasted perfection!! The options are very handy and work great. For the Bagel I just pressed toast-defrost-bagel and selected the darkness setting.I realize now that my old toaster oven was drying food out and heated unevenly. I have also cooked a pizza in it and it was done quickly and evenly also. The only complaint is what was mentioned about having to be careful not to touch it when it's hot. The handle doesn't seem to get hot but just behind it on the metal it does. It is possible you could be burned that way, I did jerk my hand back once on casually opening the door(and I have small hands). That doesn't deter me from loving this toaster oven but I will be careful when it gets very hot. My husband wants to take this one to his work... I said no way! :) With Amazons good price and free shipping its well worth it!
