Sanyo Space Saving Toasty Oven Review

Sanyo Space Saving Toasty OvenAt 950 watts and with a footprint of less than 1 sq ft, this is especially suited for a studio apartment or for a kitchen with limited counter space and a limited number of electric circuits. It's also a true gem to put in a guestroom breakfast bar, or a vacation cottage, if you are lucky enough to have either one.It works well for an elderly relative in assisted living. (Contrary to what the technical specifications state, this appliance does have an automatic shut-off feature. The timer shuts off after 15 minutes.)

As a toaster, it's relatively slow but it's versatile. E.g., it handles bagels better than a regular toaster, warms up pastries nicely, and you can toast on only one side. On the down side, toasting anything DOES take longer, as another reviewer noted; this may be because it has what appear to be "light bars" instead of metal heating coils or rods.

So, no, it's not a down-sized equivalent of an oven, or even a toaster oven. The temperature control is set in the vicinity of 375 F. You can't broil, but you CAN bake just a few cookies. Whether you use one of the refrigerated rolls of cookie dough, or make your own batch of cookie dough, you can freeze the left-overs or divide the whole batch into in pre-cut portions. Then bake 2-4 cookies while you prepare dinner. (What an aroma, to have them fresh! and no temptation later.) You can also let the kids/grandkids take out a portion, and bake them.

A bonus is that the Toasty also makes superb English muffin pizza--no soggy bottoms, like in the microwave. I also like it for melting cheese on toast. It also reheats a single slice of pizza very nicely.

About replacement pans and clean up: You can buy one of the thinner style silicone baking liners (be sure it's 100% silicone, with no fillers) for a small pan and cut it to size for each of the pans. Clean up is VERY easy then, and since the liners are reusable, it's cheaper in the long run than lining the pans with aluminum foil.

If you are, or have, a handy person around, you can also custom trim a couple of unglazed baking tiles to make your own little pizza oven.

SUMMARY: Downside is that it's slower than a toaster, more limited than a toaster-broiler oven, and a tad pricey. But it's small and it's cute!

NOTE: To find a silicone mat without fillers, just bend it. If it turns white, the mat contains fillers, and it should not be cut.

West Bend 74766 Countertop1500-Watt Convection Toaster Oven Review

West Bend 74766 Countertop1500-Watt Convection Toaster OvenI wrote two reviews for this oven because I ended up purchasing it twice. The first one shocked me with its terrible functioning, but as of purchasing the second one, I have no complaints with its operation (thus far).I wonder if these ovens suffer from some quality control issues. In order, here are my reviews:

Review #1:This is quite possibly one of the worst appliances I have ever bought in my life and I seriously hope my model is simply defective.

(1) It entire oven itself shakes and buzzes. The vibrations are terrible.
(2) The glass door touches the front of the oven and makes a loud buzzing noise. If you push against the handle, it quiets down a bit, but it's still as loud as a hair dryer. Not a comforting noise, especially listening from another room. I would say it's like listening to a bathroom fan or a jackhammer (from 2 blocks away).
(3) The fan is noisy. It starts and stutters and makes noises as if it is hitting the metal enclosure inside. If you've ever run your finger against a fan to hear the whup-whup-whup noise it makes, then you know what it sounds like. Except it's against metal, which is more worrisome.

I was so excited when I bought it and now I'm just disgusted and sad instead. It was originally going to get 1 star because it cooked food as it was supposed to. I gave it another star for having options and features. But with an oven this noisy, it's not worth it. Especially if you're paying full price. I'm glad that I paid 1/3 of what it is listed at, at a Dept. Store. However, I nearly jumped out of my skin from fright when I started it and it is going back tomorrow.

Extra note: Is it operator-error or an imbalanced countertop? I pulled out the contractor's level to double-check. My counter top is perfectly level, it was not sitting on anything unbalanced, and it was not touching any other appliances. It's the oven.

Review #2: So being the ever-lasting optimist (or just someone who can't let a good deal go), I purchased another one.I noticed that one leg was shorter than the others, and created an imbalance, but decided to try it anyway. When I clicked the "on" switch and turned the dial to 400 degrees, I held my breath, stepped back, and cringed... but the fan turned on with a gentle and not unpleasant whir. This was markedly different than the last 74766 I purchased, which buzzed and rattled. So I conclude that perhaps it was just a quality control issue. But at the price these were originally sold at, I would have hoped there were no issues! However, now that the mechanical issues are out of the way, I can finally review the oven itself.

It starts up relatively quietly and works well, has several features, though I didn't see a rotisserie option - that is in a different model, but it broils, bakes, and toasts. It comes with a very handy metal pizza disc, and can accommodate up to 12" pizzas and a whole roaster chicken; mind you - not at the same time.It is a bit large but not more than any 1.7 cubic ft. microwave, plus, it's shorter. There is a removable tray at the bottom (pulls out at the front for cleaning) and it comes in stainless or black knobs.I like the auto-shutoff timer option, and prefer the old-fashioned knobs to a digital interface. The oven itself seems sturdy enough, and has a nice metal handle (not plastic like others). It cooked quickly and relatively quietly.I am looking forward to roasting chickens and prepping dishes without needing my regular oven. But I can guarantee that I will be watching this oven closely for mechanical defects, which I'm sad about. If you buy something, you hope not to worry about it breaking!Nevertheless, if you're not paying full price for this oven, it's worth a try.Just buy two ;)

Proctor Silex 4-Slice Toaster Oven/Broiler - Black (31955) Review

Proctor Silex 4-Slice Toaster Oven/Broiler - Black (31955)I wanted a simple toaster oven to make toast and heat up open sandwiches - nothing fancy- nothing expensiveIt was hard to find because everything has a convection oven (which I didnt' need) which drives the price up into a range I didn't want to pay. This oven meets my needs - it toasts well and quickly - fits 4 slices very tightly (is a little smaller/shorter height inside than I expected.)Easy to see the toast due to rounded door design - I think it was worth the money.

T-Fal OT8085002 Avante Elite Convection Toaster Oven Review

T-Fal OT8085002 Avante Elite Convection Toaster OvenI like the looks of this oven.I had a Cuisinart Convection Toaster Oven that I tossed after two years.Unlike the Cuisinart the T-Fal is easy to clean, it doesn't have an area by the glass-hinged door that is impossible to clean. The crumb tray is accessed from the front of the oven, not the back. Also the T-Fal shuts off when the time on the timer is done. The warming tray is great for warming hot dog buns while broiling hot dogs in the oven. The controls are straight forward and easy to use without having to read the manual.I'm looking forward to many years of good cooking with this oven.If I experience any problems I'll update this review.

Proctor-Silex 31120 Pizza Oven Review

Proctor-Silex 31120 Pizza OvenHas 3" of vertical space above the rack.

Let's say a large chicken breast wrapped in alum foil is almost 3 inches thick and reaches up close to the top where the burner is. But nevertheless it bakes perfectly! For a quick Dennys stew I wrapped baking potato, onion, and carrot in with a microwave thawed chicken breast (or stewing beef chunks). Set at 450, "STAY ON", for hour + 15 minutes for extra long/very well done.

Timing/temperatures matches the range oven exactly.

Pizza is tasty crisp, unlike a soggy microwave pie.

Buy a 12" x 12" six cup muffin tray and it will fit in there and work fine.

Crumb tray slides out below.

Used in our house almost every single day for 2 years. Probably last another 10, it is simple mechanically.

Cuisinart TOB-50 Classic Toaster Oven Broiler, brushed stainless and black Review

Cuisinart TOB-50 Classic Toaster Oven Broiler, brushed stainless and blackUpdate: So far, this toaster oven can keep its five stars. I'm extremely happy with:

- The ease of cleaning the bottom tray, cheese, grease and all
- The Golden Brown & Delicious toasting of bagels, frozen waffles and bread
- The feel of the controls, even though I use medium color toast 80% of the time.
- While I have preferred functionality over form, I like the way it looks too.

Original review:
We use toaster ovens so much -no, never for real baking- but for open face sandwiches, anything where browning cheese is on top, freezer waffles and the like. Almost everything we use drips. Eventually all toaster ovens end up with grease and other solidified crud that bonds to the insides. So, we'd look for deals on the $30 Black & Decker classic toaster oven, buy two, and replace after 7-14 months rather than deep-clean them. I recycle religiously, but the B&D's only lasted about that long with our usage. As did a couple of more expensive TO's.
This time we've gone with the $99 Cuisinart. Sorry for that long history above, but I think more people will relate to this experience. Here are the nice points:

- Toast seems to take longer than the B&D, but there's a lot of room, and the golden-browning seems to be better and more even. Sourdough, whole wheat, plain white, seeded sourdough and baguette slices all seem to get this rich color that might just be the result of slightly slower toasting.
- Toasting freezer waffles is just amazing. Crisp, golden and no burns. Sometimes I like to add butter and honey at the end of the cycle and toast some more, and the results are very very good.
- Lots of space, great for that leftover pasta that you can add cream to, cover with cheese and bake over. The base is stable and the rack slides out very easily, holding a ceramic oval dish with ease.
- I kept trying to find out the wattage on this oven, one place had 900W (less than the B&D's 1300+ claim) but I haven't found it yet. I took my chances and I'm happy so far. This has two elements on top and two below. I like the results of this placement.
- For something you use every day, the controls are very pleasing to use. No cheap clunk at all. Nice heavy feel to the knobs, and an elegant start and stop button.
- The door is flat, and the hinges are a bit noisy but again the feel is solid
- The top gets hot (it's brushed stainless) and seems to want to expand. But this doesn't bother me.
- Built-in spacers are very convenient. The handles on the sides help keep some distance from other things (1/2") and there are bumpers behind to keep space between the oven and the wall.
- The interior is very straight, no funky shaping. Perfect and timeless.
- The rack is offset from the sides that slide into the toaster, offering a low or high position on each of two sets of rails. We like the upper rail, low position. Four possibilities.

If this lasts me three years I'll be very happy and at the same price point as the B&D's (which have become increasingly unreliable lately, toast buttons fail fast). Cleaning seems to be simple, stuff doesn't adhere to the crumb tray much. Cuisinarts are typically overpriced, but so far those I have, have been a great oasis when you've tried a bunch of other appliances that have problems. You eventually get to the point where "value" redefines to something that will feel good to use daily and function flawlessly. If this fails on me, I'm coming back to retract some of those five stars.

Maxi-Matic ETO-113 Elite Cuisine 2-Slice Toaster Oven with 15 Minute Timer, White Review

Maxi-Matic ETO-113 Elite Cuisine 2-Slice Toaster Oven with 15 Minute Timer, WhiteIt's very hard to find toaster ovens for only 2 slices these days. Most are for 4 to even 6 slices and can't fit on my counter.I bought this one because it fit BUT the height is SOOOO low that nothing but a thin piece of bread will cook in it without bursting into flames - a kaiser roll actually touches the top heating element.Needless to say, I sent this directly back as I really didn't want my house to burn down.
This might seem picky, but really it is called a "toaster oven" not just a "toaster" and I bought it to be able to make more than just toast, otherwise I'd just buy a toaster.

Hamilton Beach 31197R Countertop Oven with Convection and Rotisserie Review

Hamilton Beach 31197R Countertop Oven with Convection and RotisserieI bought this product at Sam's Club the other day. The product is great and I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in a rotisserie. Having a regular toaster oven and a convection oven in the same unit is a great bonus! The unit comes with two wire shelves, two pizza racks (like cookie sheets but with holes in the bottom; great for Hot Pockets) that fit on top of the wire shelves, a 1" deep backing pan, a wire rack that fits inside the backing pan, two rotisserie forks (for holding the meat on the spic), a rotisserie spic, and a rotisserie handle (for lifting it out of a hot oven).

Installation: A piece of cake. The unit comes packed in Styrofoam with the shelves and pans inside the unit; the rotisserie accessories came loose in the box but bagged in plastic. All I had to do was to wipe it down, wash the racks, and plug the box in.

Performance of the toaster oven: It toasts but boy is there a lot of room in here.

Performance of the convection oven: Never having used one before, I was surprised by the fans going off in the oven. But it did its job well cooking a pair of Hot Pockets to crispy perfection in just a little more time than the microwave. Homemade pot pies also cook very well.

Performance of the rotisserie: Great! I've cooked a beef roast and a Rock Cornish Hen and they came out so flavorful, tender, and juicy. The fat melts off this way and the drippings end up at the bottom. Make sure to cover it with a piece of foil. The unit says it can do up to a 7 ½ lb. bird, but I've only tried up to 4 lbs.

Cleanup: The bottom pan slides out for easy cleanup.

Overall I recommend this unit. Although I've never had a rotisserie or a convection oven to compare it to, it is world's better than my toaster oven. It is also ½ the price of the George Forman unit plus adds more. How can one go wrong?

Maxi-Matic ETO-730B Elite Gourmet 20-Liter 1500-Watt Convection Toaster Oven, BlackI wasn't familiar with the Maxi-Matic brand, but decided to try this toaster oven because I liked the color and design, the convection option, and the reasonable cost. Waring Pro WTO150 4-Slice Toaster Oven with Built-In 2-Slice Toaster Review

Waring Pro WTO150 4-Slice Toaster Oven with Built-In 2-Slice ToasterI've done a ridiculous amount of research on toaster ovens, trying to find a better quality one that does not have a nonstick coating (which releases poisonous gas when heated) on the interior of the oven or on the bake pans. I was very happy to find that the Waring model is nonstick-free. (For those who care, the interior is aluminized steel.) I've had the toaster oven for only a week, but so far it works very well. It has a nice solid, industrial feel to it - nothing feels cheap. The dimensions are actually 19" wide,11" deep, 9" tall - the measurements given in the description are way wrong. My husband and I really like the separate toaster slots on top and use them all the time. The interior of the oven is roomy - enough to fit 4 or 5 baked potatoes or 4 slices of traditional-size bread or 2 slices of oversize sandwich bread. I've used it to bake potatoes, broil bacon, brown a chicken and make toast - everything came out fine. The only complaints I have are really just annoyances. First, you can't use the oven without setting the timer, which I guess is a safety feature, because when the timer goes off the power shuts off. But this means if you want to cook something for a couple hours you need to be on the ball and reset the timer to continue baking. I rarely use it for more than 30 minutes so this is not a real problem for me. Second, the rack and bake pans are a pretty tight fit and when I need to change their position it takes a few seconds to line them up right - once I do they go in smoothly. But I wonder if this will be more of a problem in the future when everything gets a bit sticky and warped. I guess I'm skeptical about toaster ovens after reading so many terrible reviews of different brands and models, but I'm happy so far. I hope this one lasts 15 years like my Black & Decker that just gave out.
5/6/10 Two months later, and we have a small problem. The toaster lever won't stay down anymore if the toast 'doneness' knob isn't turned on just before I try toasting (in other words, I can't just leave it on and set to the shade I want). I'll leave my 4-star rating for now, because it has worked consistently if I start from the off position, then turn the knob on, then toast. But I didn't need to do this before. The oven still works fine and I've had no trouble with slowness, as reported by others. If a cookie recipe says 350 for 9 minutes, that's how long it takes with this oven.

Cuisinart TOB-60 Convection Toaster Oven Broiler Review

Cuisinart TOB-60 Convection Toaster Oven BroilerI followed the instructions for toast-set the rack to the B position, turned the temp to 500 degrees, set on bake/toast,turned the timer dial past 20 minute than back to the toast shade I desired, I selected the lightest shade possible. I was a little nervous after reading the burned toast comments so I stood by and watched. The toast was perfect, exactly as it would have been in a toaster.

Next I tried a 12" frozen pizza, followed the instructions-set to 425 degrees, set the rack to the A position, set the timer. The only thing I did differently was I placed a sheet of alumium foil under the bottom heating elements on top of the crumb tray because I put the pizza directly on top on the rack (instructions do not indicate to do this).I added extra cheese and spices, set the timer for 10 minutes. The top of the pizza was done perfectly. The crust was slightly burned on the bottom, next time I'll set the timer for 9 minutes and lower the temp(9 minutes for a frozen pizza! wow, even my pizzaz pizza cooker takes 25 minutes).

Yes, the dial is hard to turn at first, it does loosen up, so far this is my only complaint. I can't wait to roast chicken or a full meal using the convection feature. So far so good, very happy with this product.I got it for $104.00, so I'm even happier with the price.

DeLonghi DO1279 6-Slice Toaster Oven Review

DeLonghi DO1279 6-Slice Toaster OvenI have gone through 3 or 4 toaster ovens over the years and this is the ONE.My wife loves it too, which is all that really matters.

The fan bake is the best, food gets done quick and the food is actually properly browned and crispy.I love the light inside the unit and the digital readout ensures the temp. is correct and the timer keeps me from over cooking the food.

Something that is neat about this unit is that it has a quick function guide that pulls out from the bottom so you don't have to keep the user guide around in case you want to figure out what the pizza settings mean, etc.

My only complaint is that the display doesn't seem centered (the top and side has a white border, the bottom and right side doesn't).In addition it is pretty bright. A good night light I guess.

I would recommend this unit, it is just like William Sonoma unit (minus the dehydrator function and no stainless steel top/side casing).

Black & Decker SpaceMaker Traditional Toaster Ovens Review

Black & Decker SpaceMaker Traditional Toaster OvensI purchased our toaster earlier this week before having read any reviews about it here. I reviewed many, many other toasters/ovens on Amazon, then went to Target with a couple in mind that were in stock. In general, I'm extremely disappointed in the quality of all toasters/toaster ovens out there right now. They felt like cheap aluminum boxes mass produced in China. Our Krups toaster oven has been with us for 10 or 15 years and was wonderful. In any case, while getting disgusted at what Target did have available, around the corner in the aisle with all the Black and Decker SpaceMaker items I found this toaster and with a good sale price.

I get it home, quickly come here and see horror story after horror story. I'm wondering if I should even open the box or just take it back to Target immediately. Well, luckily I ignored the reviews here. Our SpaceMaker can opener has been wonderful and I was going to give this toaster a shot.

Having been forewarned about all the problems and headaches others have had with installation, I read all the instructions, took my time, laid everything out, checked, double checked and even triple checked before drilling any holes. Everything installed fine - no problems whatsoever. I didn't need 4 hands, extra spacers, longer screws, and didn't have any issues which others bring up. The instructions are fairly clear, and for anything which wasn't, anyone with some spacial acumen can figure out how things need to fit together. The instruction booklet was also very clear that if you needed additional spacers, to simply call them and they'd send them free of charge.

So, the toaster was installed a few days ago and looks beautiful in the location of our old toaster oven, but we now find ourselves with more counter space - just wonderful. A couple days go by and finally someone wants a toasted bagel for breakfast. Instead of blindly setting the knob for how long to toast and walking away, we did the unthinkable - we watched it toast to get an idea of how long it takes. The reason people are saying it burns their toast is because the heating elements are powerful and it toasts quickly. What's the big deal with that? Our Krups toaster oven had two heating elements on the top and two on the bottom. I was slightly concerned because this one has only one on the top and one on the bottom - however, these are thicker, they heat up extremely quickly, and they are more powerful. So, we made a guess how long we should set the timer, watched, and turned it off when done - just a tad shorter than we estimated. It also toasted evenly - no complaints.

Long story short - ignore the reviews here that do nothing but complain.

1. Read all the instructions when installing
2. Double and triple check location of holes and hood before drilling
3. First few times cooking with it, watch how long things take before being bold enough to set the timer and walk away. It's powerful - that's a good thing.

Oster 6058 6-Slice Digital Convection Toaster Oven Review

Oster 6058 6-Slice Digital Convection Toaster OvenI'm giving this convection/toaster 5 stars based on it's performance at it's price range and class. You can spend 3-4 times as much on a professional countertop convection oven like the Franklin convection oven (Amazon ASIN: B000BQ0CP6) for $250 and get a better product. However, I've used both and by comparison I think you really get your money's worth with this product.

We've had ours for about a month now and use it daily. The results are amazing.I've made numerous frozen pizzas, a meatloaf, cookies, brownies, loads of toast and lots of french fries among other things. The oven performed quite well in all cases. There is definitely a little bit of a learning curve and I goofed up a few things before I figured out how to use it. I would definitely recommmend reading the directions and following many of the recommendations for rack and food placement. That is actually very important.

Some examples of "tweaks" are as follows: With brownies you need a lower temperature than the box states when using convection and you might want to use a combination of convection and regular baking for cakes and browines.

With chocolate chip cookies you want to go with straight convection heat and depending on the mix you use you'll need to tweak the cycle. Cookiesbake in much less time but you can get abolutely perfect and uniformly colored cookies! No more burnt bottoms! For example Ghiardelli dry cookie mix from the box cooks a little differently than the frozen dough that comes in a chub, even though the baking instructions on the packages are about the same.As you might expect you can only make about 6 average cookies, or biscuits at a time.

The convection bake is excellent for making all kinds of frozen french fries that come out perfect every time. Spring rolls come out great. The oven has several pre-programed cycles, a light, a timer, and every cycle offers the opportunity to tweak the temperature and/or time. There is a nice light inside the unit that makes it easy to check food.

Other notes: When making toast be sure to follow the directions for setting the rack.

Major Plusses:

1. Holds a very consistent temperature
2. Does a very good job on many types of food - better than a conventional oven
3. Produces very uniformly cooked foods
4. Cooks many foods in less time
5. Bottom tray is easy to remove and clean
6. Easy to use

A few drawbacks:

1. It does not quite fit most 9 x 13 pans, but will cook 12 inch pizzas.
2. It does get hot and you need to be careful how you open it and where you put your hands.
3. It only comes with one shelf. I would like two shelves for making cookies.
4. There is a bit ofa "learning curve" if you're not used to convection
5. The oven operated at a slightly higher temperature than what my oven thermometer reads, but it holds at one, even temperature very well and it was consistently about the same difference at all ranges from 300 to 450. I'm honestly not sure which temperature was more correct, the oven's or my thermometer's. Based on my baking, the oven may be running a tad hotter than it says but it's easy to adjust. I would recommend checking your oven, as they may differ.

Krups FBC2 6-Slice Digital Convection Toaster Oven, Black Review

Krups FBC2 6-Slice Digital Convection Toaster Oven, BlackI finally had to replace a Delonghi that I used for 13 years. That is a pretty good run for a small appliance these days. Plus, I used it a lot. So I naturally set out to get another DeLonghi to replace it (presumably for another 13 years).

What I discovered was that toaster ovens have become much more advanced and perhaps more complex as well. I usually embrace technology in all other aspects of my life but I really liked the simplicity of 3 knobs to turn. Idiot proof. I didn't relish the idea of having to punch a bunch of buttons to reheat a casserole or even make toast.

However I did a little research and decided to get a convection type oven. I narrowed it down to 2 or 3 and chose this one based on some key factors:

1. The crumb tray must be removed from the FRONT. Rear removal is a deal breaker.

2. The LCD should light up. This one does, but many don't.

3. The oven should shut itself off after cooking time is done, just like a microwave. I multi-task in the kitchen so setting separate egg timers for separate dishes gets to be a nuisance. Plus it is safer.

Okay, one real choice -- the Krups.

Now the bonuses:

1. Fast foods like fries, fish sticks, chicken tenders come out evenly cooked and very crisp.

2. There is no interior light (I didn't need one) but the heating elements are so bright that you can pretty much see everything when one is activated.

3. The controls are very easy to use. A quick read of the manual and I owned the controls.

4. Food is invariably cooked in less time with better results. This may be seen as a negative initially because you need to guesstimate cooking times. I find that with foods/recipies that provide a range (i.e., 15-18 mins.), just go with the lower value and it comes out pretty near perfect.

5. The price is very competitive and well-worth it in my opinion. I even paid more for mine at the time of purchase (price has gone down since).

In conclusion, I am very pleased. But I guess that is clear by now.

P.S. The instructions say to run the oven empty for 15 mins before using it. Do this. Mine emitted a smell when first running empty (residue from manufacturing I suppose). As a precaution, I did it a second time and no smell.

Black & Decker TRO490W Toast-R-Oven Classic 4-Slice Countertop Oven, White Review

Black & Decker TRO490W Toast-R-Oven Classic 4-Slice Countertop Oven, WhiteLooks well constructed, nice design and backed by what I thought was a good brand name.I unpacked the first one and the handle fell off (glued to glass door with a heat resistant glue.)I exchanged it for another one.The timer would not turn off.Regardless of the setting, the timer would tick down to the "light" toast setting and stop. It could not automatically turn off.The case of the toaster also gets extremely hot, and the entire unit emits a chemical/plastic smell, which may go away with time.Further research indicated that the unit did not appear to be UL listed. I returned it to the store within 24 hours. The customer service department indicated they get many returned. Avoid.

Black & Decker TRO964 Classic Countertop 1200-Watt Toaster Oven Review

Black & Decker TRO964 Classic Countertop 1200-Watt Toaster OvenI was pretty frightened to try this toaster, but I had one several years ago and after trying a much more expensive model that took at least 10 minutes to toast bread, I decided to try it, despite all the bad reviews. And for $40, what more do you want? The oven does indeed turn off when the bell rings and can toast frozen bread in about 5 minutes, slower than a regular toaster, but much faster than the high end countertop oven that I tried.I waited about a month to write this review, because I was expecting to see flames coming from the unit, but so far it's been fine.I've used this to reheat pork chops and steak and it has worked quite well and I really like the hooks that pull the rack out about an inch when the door is opened.

DeLonghi DO400 1400-Watt Digital Control 4-Slice Toaster Oven Review

DeLonghi DO400 1400-Watt Digital Control 4-Slice Toaster OvenI used to have a much larger toaster oven, but having subsequently bought my first microwave, when the big toaster oven died, I looked for a smaller toaster oven to free up some counter space.I've had this for about a month, and I think it's quite good for what it is, but for what it is, it's overpriced. If it were cheaper I'd rate it higher. It broils beautifully. The oven heats very quickly, which is great.By my measurements, it's about 50 degrees above the requested temperature in middle ranges, as has been noted by others. But small toaster ovens are always unreliable on precise temperature. That's why all those frozen foods that come in microwave containers say don't cook them in a toaster oven (which you can do just fine, by the way, if you know how far off the temperature is).I prefer toast a little lighter than it makes toast at T-1, but it's okay.I miss features like the hook pull-outs, which not only pull the shelf out when you open the door but keep the door from crashing up and down, and the pull-out, rather than drop-down, crumb drawer. It's a perfectly adequate small toaster oven, but it should be either a little better or a little cheaper.

Maxi-Matic Elite Cuisine 4-Slice Toaster Oven Broiler Review

Maxi-Matic Elite Cuisine 4-Slice Toaster Oven BroilerIt is getting harder to find a good small toaster oven at almost any price. We had a GE toaster oven that was purchased in the late 1970's.It fit on a 10' deep shelf and took very little space. The rack pulled out when the door was opened had a shiny chrome interior which made great toast and it lasted almost 30 years. When it finally died, we looked for a replacement. The only one that fit in the space we wanted looked almost the same as our old GE.It was a Black and Decker unit and it only lasted a year before the top element burnt out. It also was built very cheaply.
We shopped around and read some good reviews on the Maxi Matic.Price was good and it actually didn't have a cheap feel to it like the B&D.It makes great toast.Heats up fast and is easy to clean. It has quartz elements that seem pretty sturdy. That is the good part. The trade off is that the toasting is regulated by a timer, not a sensor. There isn't a temperature control for baking. The heating elements do not turn off when the door is opened. This is a very basic unit. The switch on top is for off- top element-bottom element or both elements(toast)The bottom is just a timer that ticks very loudly and is maxed at 15 minutes and has markings for light, medium and dark toast.(Use light or it comes out burnt)
If you need a toaster oven in a small space this is a decent unit. What's sad is that all the toaster ovens in this category are crappy compared to what was available 20 years ago.Price wasn't an issue. They are all crappy

Black & Decker TROS1000 Spacemaker Oven Review

Black & Decker TROS1000 Spacemaker OvenThis item has been nicely updated. It now has a black and stainless steel look which just happens to match my updated kitchen. Also, capacity is larger than previously. On the down side, a tray is not provided; previous models included the proper size tray. Secondly, I am concerned about the door. It opens on one hinge to a "springy", unstable position; previous models had a hinge on both sides of the door which opened to a solid, firm position. The Spacemaker Oven no longer enters "Pause" mode when you open the door to check on your food; oblivious to the open door, it just keeps on cooking. Although the word "broil" appears nowhere on this unit, "Bake" mode can be set to broiling temperature, 450 degrees.

As you may have read elsewhere, installation of this unit can be quite a challenge. You can follow B&D's directions to a point, but after you place a washer over each of the four holes as directed I would suggest you follow these alternate directions (for Standard Installation): (1) Drop a screw through each washer, covering each of the 4 holes. There should be ample amount of screw protruding beneath your cabinet to allow for proper threading into the nut. Choose screws accordingly from the hardware bag provided. No need to search in the bag for the nuts. They are already implanted into the mounting hood. See them? (2) On the floor--or on a table that you can circumnavigate--attach the hood to the oven, NOT to the cabinet as the folks at B&D would have you do. (3) The half inch or so space between the top of the oven and the bottom of the hood must be maintained temporarily or else the hood might disengage in the rear. Therefore, insert a wash cloth into this space on each side of the unit. You may first want to fold them neatly in order to create a more snug, even fit. Leave part of each wash cloth hanging out of the space for ease of removal when the time comes. (4) At this point, if you are strong enough to lift the oven and screw it onto the bottom of your cabinet, go ahead and do so. Then skip down to step #6. If you aren't that strong--or, very wisely, just want to be cautious--we will need to put something on top of the counter, something that will prop up the oven to a few inches below the four hanging screws. For example, I used two pillows. I put the pillows on top of the counter and the oven, facing me, atop the pillows. Assuming that you arrange something similar, using pillows or whatever, the top of the hood should now be only a few inches below the four hanging screws. (5) Okay, this is it! You have your Phillips screwdriver, right? And may I assume that your cabinet doors are open? With one arm under the oven, probably your left if you're right-handed, you are going to raise the oven in order for the hood to make contact with the bottom of the screws. Meanwhile, your right hand, holding the screwdriver down in the screw of your choice, is eagerly waiting to screw. When you get one screw done it's like you've got a helping hand. Don't screw it all the way, though. Go to the next, then the next, then the last. Now screw them in more, evenly. Finally, tighten them up. (6) Now pull out the wash cloths. Under no circumstances are you to leave anything in that space. (7) I find that the unit looks better without the four little feet. If you agree, use your Phillips to unscrew them.

I hope I've helped you.

Hamilton Beach 22708H Toastation 2-Slice Toaster and Mini Oven, Black Review

Hamilton Beach 22708H Toastation 2-Slice Toaster and Mini Oven, BlackWhen our beloved 30 year old (from dorm days!) toaster oven died, we thought we'd go buy one just like it -- basic, small, good at toasting, yet usable as a small oven.Alas, nobody seemed to make anything like it.They tended to be larger, and didn't do a good job toasting bread.

After reading lost of discouraging reviews and trying a couple of toaster ovens, we had just about given up, when we saw the Toastation. What a great little unit!Makes great toast, nice and fast like a toaster should (through a slot in the top). Then flip a switch, and the top slot closes and it turns into a nice little oven.

It doesn't hog the whole counter (outside dimensions: 15" wide, 7 1/2 deep, and 8 high). The inside of the oven is small (6 1/2" deep by 10 1/2" wide by 2" high), so don't plan on baking pizza in it.

Product Description:
Save on counter space with this two-in-one appliance. The unit functions as both a traditional toaster and as a toaster oven. As a toaster, it provides a 1-1/2-inch-wide toasting slot that can fit up to two slices of bread, two frozen waffles, or two halves of a bagel or English muffin. Simply drop in the item to be toasted, adjust the shade setting by turning the control knob, and push down the lever on the side. A convenient "cancel" button stops the toasting at any time. Easily switch from the toaster function to the oven by sliding the function lever on the front of the unit. This will seal the toaster slot and trap in the heat. The oven provides a temperature-control knob for just the right amount of heat, and its spacious interior will accommodate chicken nuggets, French fries, two 16-inch pizza slices, or two 5-inch single-serve pizzas. Other thoughtful details include automatic shutoff for safety, a removable crumb tray for quick cleanup, and a sleek, stylish look in a compact design. The two-slice toaster and oven combination unit measures approximately 17 by 9 by 9 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

As much as I like this thing, the controls have quit functioning, after only 7 months of use (initially stuck on high Grill, then wouldn't turn on). And, for those of us who do not live close to Toronto, warranty service is next to useless, because it costs $37.50 for me to mail it from my location internationally to Toronto, plus $9.95 that they request for return shipping and handling, plus the uncertainty that they will actually repair/replace the thing "if it is found ... to be defective in material or workmanship".I contacted customer service for a better solution (e.g. send me some replacement knob modules), but I don't know if that is possible or feasible --stay tuned for updates. For the moment I am lowering my rating of this toaster to 3 stars because this is too soon to break, but I really like using it and want to give their customer service a chance, though they haven't yet bothered to respond to me (On June 26 I used their website contact page, and on June 30 I sent them email; and I have been checking my spam folder).I hope we can work out a more reasonable way to repair it.For the moment I've moved my old kenmore back into the kitchen -- it has lasted several years and counting, and was replaced only for cosmetic reasons.]

Original review (4 stars):
I bought this from Sears to replace my dirty ugly (but functional) old Kenmore toaster oven.I am pretty happy with it, but there are a few things about it that are not perfect.

I think this toaster oven is the same as many others out there. If you are shopping for toaster ovens, you will see that there are lots of different models and brands offering pretty much the same configuration of controls and features as this one. I suspect that they are all made in the same factory and just have different body styles and name brands slapped on to them.

Anyway, here are some of the features that I like about it:
- It has a "Stay On" setting, so if I am baking something that will take more than 60 minutes I don't have to keep turning up the timer to keep the oven on.
- It offers different cooking combinations of top heat, bottom heat, both, convection on and off.
- It has a bulge in the back ("pizza bump") so that I can put a 12 inch diameter pizza pan in it (one was in the box, but I prefer a pizza screen). Not counting the bulge, the interior is about 9" x 12".It is 4.75 inches from the rack in lowest position to the top heating elements.
- It came with a second rack so I can heat things on two racks at the same time if I want to.
- The stainless steel body means that I can scrub the body without having to worry about removing color (and it looks good)

A few flaws that made me contemplate returning it:
- The outside gets hotter than my older (Kenmore) toaster oven.I put a grill thermometer on the top, when baking at full temp, the top surface reaches 220, about 20 degrees warmer than my old Kenmore.I looked and there appears to be an air gap between the roof of the oven and the outside top surface, but I could not tell if there is any insulation in there. But that means it gets the kitchen hotter, and it provides a hotter warming shelf (plates now get too hot if left too long).[I have moved my ugly old toaster oven out to my patio, and if it is too hot to bake inside, I will bake out there instead.]
- The temperature dial goes down to 150 degrees, but when I have tested it with various cooking modes, the actual oven temperature didn't go lower than 200 in one cooking mode, and 180 in another one.I had been hoping to use this for things like slow roasting and food drying, but that is too hot.
- At the corners of the glass door, there are little cushions that probably protect the glass door from shock, but they also prevent the glass door from closing the whole way, so there is a gap of about 2.5mm to let the heat out (using more electricity and making the kitchen hotter).I haven't decided if this is a feature (perhaps it was felt that some air flow was needed) or a bug.
- If you pull the rack out more than one inch, the back is no longer supported so the back of the rack falls down, and what you are baking slides down to the back. This is a real design flaw, but I have just gotten used to the annoyance and hardly pull the rack out now.

However, in spite of these flaws, I find that I am really happy with the purchase and have enjoyed using its many functions.

Also, note that the ridiculously huge dimensions given in the Amazon listing (at the time of this writing) are the size of the box, not the toaster oven itself. The toaster oven is 17.75 wide x 10.25 tall x 13.5 deep, not counting little bumpers which stick out of the side and back about a half inch to prevent it being pushed too close to walls.

Breville BOV650 Compact Smart Oven Review

Breville BOV650 Compact Smart OvenIt's a shame you have to spend over $150 for a good toaster oven, but if the cost is not an issue, this is an excellent one. This is not a convection oven, but is exactly what I wanted and it fits perfectly where the cheap one it replaced was.
This oven is well made, the door opens smoothly, the rack comes out easily. The pan that comes with it is heavy and enameled, not cheap sheet metal. The control system is excellent. The display is illuminated while setting or cooking, but dims out when not in use. I found it very easy to use. Toasting is a single touch and it compensates for the hot oven with multiple toast cycles. I've used the bake cycle and the muffins turned out great. It remembers your last setting for each cycle, so if you determine the 'perfect' setting for your favorite bagels or pizza, it's preset and ready to start when selecting the cycle. The crumb tray pulls out the front and is very easy to clean. This is vastly superior to out the back or from the bottom that most of the others I looked at have.

Chef's Planet Nonstick Toaster Oven Liner Review

Chef's Planet Nonstick Toaster Oven LinerI have a full-size liner in my over, but have to keep it on one of the oven racks rather than in the bottom. It does a good job catching drips and helping to keep the oven clean. So when I saw one sized for a toaster oven, I bought it.I have two problems with this liner. The first is that it doesn't fit my toaster oven. The second (a HUGE problem according to my husband) is that it isn't as reflective as the bottom of the toaster oven so that toast comes out much darker on the top than on the bottom. The main reason I purchased a new toaster oven is because out old one was giving us very uneven results. The new one worked great until we put the liner in.(And took it back out within a couple of days.)I would use this product if I were baking something messy or top-browning something that might drip, but it doesn't work for us for day-to-day use.

Black & Decker CTO4500S 6-Slice CounterTop Convection Oven with Pizza Bump, Stainless Steel Review

Black & Decker CTO4500S 6-Slice CounterTop Convection Oven with Pizza Bump, Stainless SteelWe bought this toaster about two months ago, after much research. Our old one was a simple, cheap one from Sunbeam, which lasted about ten years until the lever for toast broke.
I never really wanted a "convection" toaster, but I decided to give it a try because I thought it might save energy when baking. It actually does a very fast job at that, much more efficient than the regular oven we used before.
I used the broiler just once so far and it works well.
Toast is very good: crunchy on the outside, moist inside (but that depends on taste). One gripe is with the knobs, which are hard to grab. The design of the knob is especially annoying in the timer, because it just sort of slides to the desired time, there's no way of precisely selecting the position, like a good stereo knob would. We haven't quite found the best spot on the timer for the perfect toast, I'm having to rely on visual clues and often just take the toast out before the timer rings.
The tray is easy to clean and slides out conveniently.
The hooks on the door hinges that make the rack slide out make it difficult to close the door completely - we decided to fold ours in and not use them, so the door closes correctly.
Be diligent when shopping for this item, prices vary widely from place to place and you may overpay.

Oster 6-Slice Convection Toaster Ovens Review

Oster 6-Slice Convection Toaster OvensGreat little toaster oven w/ lots of options. Possesses wide range of ability - from making toast to baking muffins. The rounded back side of the toaster oven allows for a 9" frozen pizza to be cooked within. Great thinking. Controls are simple, and easy to understand. A superior value for the money.

Room for improvement (reason for 4 stars/not 5):
1. The timer is loud - not obnoxiously so, but one is aware that the oven is on.
2. The design of the handle/glass door. Be very careful when opening the oven door! It is all too easy to touch part of the very hot glass door (burns!) when using the front handle. If you are aware of this - and are careful, is not a problem. Would not want children using this appliance for this reason.

Breville BOV800XL The Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster Oven with Element IQ Review

Breville BOV800XL The Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster Oven with Element IQThe Breville Smart Oven is a must-have kitchen appliance. In many/most cases it can serve as a replacement for it larger cousin the conventional oven/range. However, the Smart Oven is much more energy efficient (using roughly 50% less electricity) and can fit into the smallest of kitchens

Things that we enjoy

+ Depending on the setting (Broil/Bake/Toast) you have the ability to manage the temperature zones in the oven. This helps to ensure perfect cooking depending on you individual requirements.
+ The magnetic door helps to prevent any burns (see video)
+ Door seals nicely - reducing energy waste and the unneeded heating of your home.
+ 9 programmable settings - HOWEVER - you also have the ability to tailor the settings to your individual needs.
+ Nice Stainless steel finish will look nice in all kitchens.
+ Despite being stainless steel the surface of the oven does not show too many fingerprints.
+ Three pans included - Pizza - Baking - Broiling
+ Great operating manual
+ Not just a standard toaster oven - this is also a convection oven!
+ AS A OVEN IT WORKS GREAT

Areas to improve

- The cord is a little short (less than 3 feet) - while many people may appreciate a short cord it does mean that you have to have outlet near a space where you plan to use the oven.
-You may not be able to operate other appliances on your electrical circuit- At full heat the Smart Oven will pull between 15-20 amps - make sure that you have at least a 20amp breaker on the plug that you are using.Final Verdict.... this is an easy 5 stars - purchase with confidence.

Product Description:
Attractively housed in reinforced stainless steel, this 1800-watt convection toaster oven features a 4/5-cubic-foot nonstick interior and Element IQ technology, which provides smarter control over the heat. Choose from nine pre-set functions: Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, or Warm; each one comes with its own pre-programmed temperature and cooking time, eliminating the guesswork. The unit's broil function activates just the top heating elements to melt and brown food; its toast function activates the top and bottom heating elements to seal and crisp; and the bake function uses both the top and bottom heating elements, as well as the convection fan, to ensure thorough cooking, inside and out. Instead of the oven's five quartz heating elements having a fixed wattage, however, Element IQ functions much like a dimmer on a light switch, increasing or decreasing the power with a simple turn of the knob. The time and temperature for the pre-set programs can easily be adjusted to accommodate individual preferences--the oven will even remember the new settings for next time.
Thoughtfully designed, the oven's push-button and turn-knob control panel, as well as its blue back-lit LCD screen, makes it effortless to operate the unit and to see the current function, temperature, and adjusts made. Other highlights include fast heat-up times, energy-efficient operation, three rack positions, a wire rack that ejects automatically halfway out of the oven for safe removal of hot items, an embossed and ribbed top surface that can be used as a warming tray, and a front-access removable crumb tray for quick cleanup. Combining durable materials and powerful performance with a strikingly modern design, users will want to leave the oven out on display and conveniently accessible for everyday use. Accessories include a 13-inch non-stick pizza pan, a 12-by-12-inch enamel baking pan, and a 12-by-12-inch enamel broil rack. The oven measures 18-1/2 by 12-1/2 by 10-3/4 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.
